Characteristics and care of dry skin – how to relieve and prevent dryness on the face

Dry skin, also known as xerosis or xeroderma , is a very common skin condition that can affect both children and adults – and especially during the winter months. Dry skin often occurs when the skin's natural barrier is weakened, leading to moisture loss, itching, flaking and irritation.

In this post, we'll go over the most common signs of dry skin on the face and body, as well as how to best care for and protect your skin – especially if you struggle with very dry skin, flaky patches, or itchy, red skin.

Typical characteristics of dry skin

Symptom Description
Tight and rough skin The skin feels tight after washing and has an uneven, dry surface.
Scaling or peeling Often visible on the cheeks, forehead or nose – especially in the winter months.
Itching (pruritus) One of the most common symptoms of dry and itchy skin.
Cracks in the skin Small lines, cracks or even fissures that may hurt or bleed.
Color changes Redness on light skin, or grayish sheen on brown and black skin.

Dry skin can occur temporarily after a change in weather, or it can be a chronic skin condition. It is often seen on the face, hands, legs, and around the eyes and nose.

Dry skin care – what works?

To relieve and prevent dry skin, we recommend the following:

  1. Choose a mild, perfume-free cleanser – avoid foaming soaps and strong cleaning products
  2. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Apply moisturizer to dry skin several times a day – especially after bathing
  3. Use a fat cream or facial oil at night – to seal in moisture
  4. Avoid hot water – use lukewarm and keep the bath short (5–10 min)
  5. Wear gloves and cotton clothing to protect your skin from cold and irritation.
  6. Choose ingredients such as :
    • Hyaluronic acid
    • Glycerin
    • Squalane
    • Shea butter
    • Ceramides
    • Jojoba oil
    • Lanolin
    • Dimethicone

FAQ about dry skin

What is dry skin?

Dry skin is a condition where the skin lacks moisture and lipids. It often feels tight, rough and flaky – and in severe cases can crack and bleed.

What are the causes of dry skin?

It can be caused by weather conditions (cold and wind), use of strong soaps, too much bathing, sun damage or underlying skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

What is the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water. Many people have both – which is why skincare should contain both moisturizing and fat-retaining ingredients.

What type of cream is best for dry skin?

Oily creams and moisturizers with shea butter, hyaluronic acid and ceramides are ideal. Choose fragrance-free and soothing products, especially for the face.

Should I use oil or cream?

You can use both. Facial oil is good as a supplement in the evening, while cream for dry skin on the face is ideal during the day to seal in moisture.
